If you have a car in a foreign country and you want to bring it back to the United States or sell it, you may be required to obtain an apostille on your car title or a DMV record. Georgia Apostille can process an apostille on a car title or a DMV letter from any of the 50 US states and the District of Columbia.
Before your car title can be apostilled it must be notarized by a notary public licensed in the state where your car title or DMV letter was issued. We recommend choosing an experienced public notary knowledgeable in the notarial laws in your state. The most common reason for rejections by the State Apostille office is errors in document notarizing. Your DMV department may refer you to a qualified notary in your state, or you can find one on your own.
You will need to bring your original car title or a DMV letter to a notary and he/she will make a certified color copy of your document. Check that the notary signs, dates, and stamps your DMV letter or a car title and uses the appropriate notarial affidavit required in your particular state. You can also use a mobile notary and bring her/him to your local DMV for notarization. If you are outside of the United States, you can mail your original car title or a DMV letter and Georgia Apostille will take care of notarizing and apostilling it.
Once you have your car title or a DMV letter notarized, please email us a copy of it for a free review by one of our apostille experts. We will check your document and provide instructions for your next steps.
An apostille on a car title or a DMV letter is always processed in the same state that issued your document. So, if, for example, your car title was issued and notarized in New Jersey, an apostille will be processed by the New Jersey Secretary of State.
An apostille can be processed on a car title or a DMV record only if it is going to a country – member of the Hague Apostille Convention. If your documents are intended for a country that is not a member of the Hague Treaty, they will require a different authentication process which involves a certification by the United States Department of State and legalization from the Embassy/Consulate.
