If you are applying for an employment visa, student visa, permanent residency, or dual citizenship in a foreign country, you will be required to provide an apostilled background check. Depending on the country of your destination and the nature of your trip, you may be asked for a local background check (police or Sheriff’s office background check), a state background check (from the Department if Justice in your state), or a federal background check from the FBI.

Georgia Apostille can process apostille on background checks from local, state, or federal authorities. Before you apply for an apostille check with the country of your destination what type of background check do they need.

1. Police or Sheriff’s Department Background Check

If the country of your destination requested a local police or Sheriff’s Department background check, you will need to contact your local police station and ask them for a police report. The police department will run a search in their database for any records on you and will write a letter stating their findings. This letter must be signed by an authorized deputy or officer and notarized. Once you have your letter, please mail it to our office for apostille processing. An apostille on your police background check will be received from the same state that issued your police background check. Thus, if you received your background check from the Sheriff’s office in Virginia, the apostille on your document will be processed in Virginia.

2. The Department of Justice (DOJ) Background Check

If the country of your destination requested a background check from the State Department of Justice, you will need to contact your state DOJ and ask them for a background check report. The DOJ will run a search in their database for any records on you and will issue a statement with their findings. This letter must be signed by an authorized officer and notarized. Once you have your letter, please mail it to our office for apostille processing. An apostille on your DOJ background check will be received from the same state that issued your document. So, if you received your background check from New York State Department of Justice, the apostille on your document will be processed in New York.

3. The FBI Background Check

A majority of countries request background checks from the FBI. To receive a background check from the FBI, you will need to contact the FBI directly or via the approved FBI channeler. The FBI background check may be sent to you by email as a pdf file, or mailed as a hard copy. You will need to send us the FBI report in the same format as you received it from the FBI or your FBI channeler. Unlike the local and state background check, an apostille on the FBI background check will be processed by the United States Department of State in Washington, DC.

If a country requesting your background check is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, your document will receive an apostille. However, if you are going to a country that is not a signee to the Hague Apostille Treaty, your background check will require a different authentication process involving a certification by the United States Department of State and legalization through the Embassy/Consulate. Georgia Apostille can assist you with both the apostille and legalization process.
